WSI Energycast Seasonal Tropical Update Maintains Forecast Numbers on Continued Expectations of Active Season
WSI issues an update of special interest to energy traders
Andover, MA, September 27, 2007 - WSI Corporation issued an update to their 2007 seasonal tropical outlook on September 18. The updated forecast for the season is 14 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes (category 3 or greater). The forecast numbers (14/6/4) are only slightly different from the previous forecast numbers (14/6/3). As of September 24, the seasonal numbers to date were 10/3/2. The forecast numbers are larger than the long-term averages of 9.6 named storms, 5.9 hurricanes, and 2.3 intense hurricanes, and also larger than the numbers from 2006. The main drivers of the remainder of the season are (1) a continuation of the warm western tropical Atlantic Ocean temperatures and (2) a relatively benign vertical wind shear environment associated with the emerging La Nina event.
According to WSI seasonal forecaster Dr. Todd Crawford, “This tropical season has been active as expected, highlighted by two category-five storms. The combination of warm western tropical Atlantic ocean temperatures and an enabling wind shear regime has resulted in another season of double-digit named storms. Conditions continue to appear reasonably favorable for an active finish to the year. Because there have already been two intense hurricanes and because of the improving wind shear environment, we have increased our total forecast to four for the season. Otherwise, we are content to leave the existing forecast numbers as is.”
WSI has been providing industry-leading seasonal forecasts for energy traders since 2000. The next full seasonal forecast package, which will include forecasts for winter temperatures in both the US and Europe, will be issued to clients on October 16 and to the press on October 22. Seasonal tropical forecasts will resume next spring.
