World Leading Meteorological Capabilities. WSI has developed the world’s largest commercial meteorological database, incorporating U.S. National Weather Service, U.S. military, Canadian, British, and Japanese governments, other international agencies, and commercial vendors. WSI has extensive data collection facilities for NEXRAD, satellite, NWP models, lightning and other meteorological data. We receive the NEXRAD data via the NWS Central Radar Distribution System and also through NOAAport as a redundant path. To support the volume of inbound data needed to create the variety of products supplied by WSI, WSI manages 21 on-site satellite dishes. |

A Robust Delivery Infrastructure. The heart of WSI’s data capability is our Central Processing Facility. Weather data flows into WSI at the rate of 85 Gbytes per day and is processed in the WSI data center to produce over 12 Gbytes of value added products for our customers. This mission critical data is distributed to thousands of customers through our sophisticated network of high-speed satellite systems, internet servers and landlines. The Central Processing Facility houses a distributed computing architecture comprising of over 450 systems. Distribution of data occurs over 5 carriers on 3 high-speed satellite systems at up to 1Mbps. Internet connectivity is via fiber optic lines. 4 x 2 Mega Watts of onsite diesel power generation is clean enough to be permitted direct access to the local power grid. UPS modules provide roll-over power and system backup at 100% building load for over 30 min – though less than 10 sec is required to draw power from the generators. WSI's People. While our infrastructure has been built for reliability, the most important contributor to mission critical readiness is our people. WSI operates a 24x7 support facility where forty percent of WSI's 220 employees are degreed meteorologists. Our highly trained and dedicated staff is the key reason that WSI continues to satisfy the most demanding aviation and media customers in the world, including the FAA’s National Command Center, major airline operations centers, NASA Space Centers, and the Navy’s Norfolk and San Diego Meteorological Centers. |
