Meteorological Operations Specialist

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Become an important member of the WSI Meteorological Services Team responsible for providing quality control and meteorological support for WSI’s premiere data products and services worldwide.

Your meteorological and technical expertise, along with knowledge of weather-sensitive operations will help maintain high standards for product timeliness, accuracy and quality our customers expect.

The Meteorological Services Specialist will also help generate daily forecasts using advanced weather detection and forecast technologies. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide meteorological quality control for WSI’s global products and services including NOWrad Mosaic Radar, Satellite imagery, Lightning Networks and market-specific Custom Graphics
  • Monitor WSI’s Central Facility System involving processes that ingest, generate and broadcast unaltered and value added data products and services worldwide
  • Collaborate with WSI technical staff to fault isolate and resolve issues impacting data services availability and/ or reliability
  • Collaborate closely with WSI Forecast Teams regarding synoptic, regional and mesoscale weather events expected to impact WSI customer assets worldwide
  • Generate short-fused narratives, forecast discussions and weather alerts for disruptive weather events within the 0-24 hour forecast domain as weather conditions dictate.
  • Generate Storm Following forecast graphics and Weather Alerts depicting forecast information for significant weather events including severe weather, winter snow and ice and tropical systems
  • Actively participate in the Collaborative Weather Briefing process
  • Provide resource for special projects involving all aspects of Meteorological Services as needed.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE/ SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • BA or BS in Meteorology or related science.  In lieu of a meteorological degree, the applicant must possess a college degree and have successfully completed weather observation and forecasting schools with one of the military services.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.   Experience with Windows/ Unix/ Linux operating systems desired.   Familiarity with Solaris/ IRIX/ HTML/ Programming Languages a plus.  

  • Solid understanding of theoretical and practical meteorology

  • Ability to effectively interact in an operational team environment
  • Ability to deliver operational content consistently and accurately within rigid time constraint

  • Demonstrable and exceptional telephone, verbal and interpersonal communications skills

  • Demonstrable organizational, data analysis, data collation and process management skills

  • Ability to effectively summarize large quantities of data into clear, concise information under rigid time constraint

  • Demonstrable proficiency in utilizing advanced workstation technology and scientific methods to derive forecast products in an operational environment

  • Ability to effectively multitask and adjust priorities based on changing weather conditions in a fast-paced operational environment essential
